The 5 Layers that Shape your Life (and how to walk through them)

Most inner work stops too soon. Or never begins.
And this happens not because the human being is unwilling to go deeper. But because the levels they are working with are not deep enough.
We work on our childhood wounds. We recognize our behavioral patterns. We do the therapy, the sessions, the retreats. And yet something keeps running underneath — a current that does not quite respond to the tools we have been given, because it comes from somewhere those tools were never designed to reach.
What I want to share with you today is a map or different levels that I have come to understand through my own path, through decades of inner work and introspection, critical thinking, sacred site guiding, ceremony holding, and the specific kind of remembering that happened when I slowed down enough to actually listen.
It is a map of five layers of patterning that shape every human life. And this is not for me a theory but a living reality that I have witnessed in myself and through my relationship with Marieke that guided the formation of Luminous School of Creation.
When you understand these five layers, and more importantly, when you begin to consciously walk through them everything that felt stuck starts moving.
Why We Keep Repeating What We Want to Change
Before I name the five layers, I want to say something about why they matter.
Most of us have had the experience of understanding something clearly, seeing a pattern in ourselves with perfect intellectual clarity, and then watching ourselves repeat it anyway.
We know why we choose the relationships we choose. We know why we react the way we react. And we still do it.
This is not weakness. It is not a lack of will. It is the sign that the pattern runs deeper than the level at which we have been trying to address it.
The mind can see a pattern. But it cannot dissolve a pattern that lives in the body, in the ancestral field, in the memory carried across lifetimes. And is being carried now by your nervous system, the first organ that start developing on a human being.
This is why the work of Eleusis, the return to yourself, the descent beneath the persona (προσωπείο) cannot be rushed or bypassed. And it is why the journey from Eleusis through Hieros Gamos and into Human Circle is not a program with a beginning and an end. It is a lifelong deepening through every layer of what you are.
Let me take you through the five layers I have come to understand.

Layer One — The Personal Life
The patterns formed in this lifetime, through childhood, family, and relationship
This is where most inner work begins. And rightly so it is the most immediately accessible layer and the one whose effects are most visible in daily life.
The patterns formed in early childhood, our parents, close relatives and friends, the beliefs we created as children, the emotional responses we learned to survive, the identities we built to receive love or to stay safe, these run quietly underneath every relationship, every decision, every reaction we have as adults.
A child who learned that love comes with conditions becomes an adult who either performs for approval or avoids intimacy entirely. A child whose emotions were not welcome learns to live in the head rather than the body. A child who witnessed conflict as the primary mode of connection learns to equate intensity with love.
None of this was chosen. All of it can be seen and gradually, honestly, changed.
In our work, this is the territory of the first arc of Eleusis. The recognition, the remembrance. The Map. The Mask and the Face. The body that holds what the mind has been trying to outrun. The grief beneath the anger that has been waiting years for a safe enough space to complete.
This layer is the most painful to enter and the most immediately transformative when met honestly.
Layer Two — The Cultural Environment
The patterns inherited from education, media, culture, and collective conditioning
Beneath the personal layer lies something larger and less visible the cultural field we were born into.
Every culture carries a set of beliefs about what is real, what is possible, what is valuable, and what is dangerous. These beliefs are transmitted not through explicit instruction but through the air we breathe, through the stories told in schools, through media, through the assumptions so widely shared that no one thinks to question them.
We inherit beliefs about gender, what it means to be a man, what it means to be a woman, which capacities are celebrated and which are suppressed. We inherit beliefs about success, about the body, about age, about what love looks like, about whether the invisible world is real or imaginary.
Most of these beliefs were never chosen. They were installed.
And they shape not only how we think but how we perceive. We literally see the world through the lens of our cultural conditioning, which means that working only on the personal layer, without touching the cultural field, is like cleaning a window from the inside while the outside remains opaque.
This is one of the reasons why Hieros Gamos, the work of the inner masculine and feminine is so essential. Because the imbalance between masculine and feminine within us is not only personal. It is cultural. It is thousands of years of civilization telling one force it is superior and the other that it is dangerous. That story runs in us whether or not it ever played out directly in our individual families.
Working consciously with the cultural layer means being willing to question beliefs so fundamental that questioning them feels like questioning reality itself.
Layer Three — The Ancestral Memory
The patterns carried in the body through ancestral and epigenetic memory
Science is beginning to confirm what many ancient traditions have always understood: we carry the memory of our ancestors in our bodies.
Epigenetics, the study of how experience shapes genetic expression, has shown that trauma experienced by one generation can alter the nervous system responses of the next, and the next after that. The fear of a great-grandmother. The grief of a grandfather who never mourned. The survival patterns of a lineage shaped by war, displacement, or oppression.
These are not metaphors. They are biological realities.
But the ancestral field carries more than trauma. It also carries wisdom, strength, gifts, and the unfinished business of people who came before us, threads they could not complete in their lifetimes that have been passed forward, waiting for a consciousness capable of seeing and addressing them.
I have encountered this layer many times in ceremony moments when something moves through a person that is clearly not only theirs. A grief that is too ancient to belong to one life. A rage that has the weight of generations. A longing so deep it seems to come from the land itself.
When we work with ancestral patterns at Luminous, we do so with great reverence. Not every wound that moves through you belongs to you personally. Some of what you carry, you carry on behalf of those who could not.
Completing that work consciously, with respect is one of the most profound acts of service a person can offer their lineage.

Layer Four — The Memory Carried Across Lifetimes
The patterns that persist through multiple incarnations
I speak about this layer from personal experience, not from theory.
I remember aspects of past lives. Not as imagination or metaphor as real memories with real emotional weight, real locations, real decisions whose consequences I have been living out in this lifetime.
The recognition of a pattern so ancient it could not possibly have originated in one childhood. The terror that has no source in this life's experience. The love for a place, a tradition, or a way of being that feels more like remembering than discovering. The skills that arrive fully formed. The relationships that carry the unmistakable weight of something unfinished.
These are not proof of anything I can offer you externally. But they are real to those who have encountered them and they point to a dimension of inner work that most psychological frameworks are simply not equipped to address.
When a pattern does not respond to work at the personal or ancestral level, it is worth asking gently, without forcing anything whether its roots might be older.
In the path of Eleusis, the descent goes as far as the person is genuinely ready to descend. Some descents take you to childhood. Some take you much further. Both are valid. Both require the same quality of honest presence and safe witnessing.
Layer Five — The Fragmented Soul (Galactic and Universal Memory)
The patterns carried as souls that exist across multiple dimensions of reality
This is the layer I speak of most carefully because it is the most easily misunderstood, and because the language available for it is the least precise.
And yet I have come to believe it is real.
We are, at the deepest level, souls fragments of consciousness that exist across multiple dimensions of reality simultaneously. The life you are living now is one expression of a presence that is far larger than any single incarnation, any single planet, any single layer of existence.
The patterns and memories carried at this level are not personal in any ordinary sense. They are the imprints of a consciousness that has moved through many forms, many worlds, many states of being and that carries the accumulated learning of all of it.
What this means practically is this: some of what you feel some of the longing, the disconnection, the sense of having come from somewhere else and not quite belonging here is not pathology. It is memory. It is the soul's awareness of its own vastness, pressing through the smallness of a single human life.
The path of Homo Luminous which is the horizon of everything we do at Luminous School of Creation is, at its deepest level, the path of a soul recollecting itself across all these layers. Becoming whole not only within this lifetime, but within the full arc of its existence.
This is not something to be forced or rushed. It is what becomes possible when the first four layers have been honestly worked with when the personal wounds have been met, the cultural conditioning has been questioned, the ancestral patterns have been completed, and the lifetime memories have been integrated.
Then something larger becomes accessible. Not as an achievement. As a natural unfolding.
The Path Through the Layers
What I have described is not a ladder to be climbed in sequence. It is a spiral.
You begin where you are almost always in Layer One, the personal. And the honest work at that level gradually reveals Layer Two. The cultural work reveals Layer Three. And so on, as the person is ready.
This is exactly the movement of our work at Luminous School of Creation through Eleusis, through Hieros Gamos, into Human Circle and the vision of Homo Luminous.
Eleusis the return to yourself addresses primarily the first two layers. The personal wounds. The cultural conditioning. The body that has been holding what the mind has been too busy to feel.
Hieros Gamos, the sacred inner marriage, addresses Layers Two, Three, and the beginning of Four. The cultural imbalance between masculine and feminine. The ancestral patterns around love, power, and belonging. The past-life memories that show up in the specific texture of what we attract and what we cannot seem to move beyond.
Human Circle, right relationship with life and with community is where the work of all five layers becomes shared. Where individuals who have done the inner descent come together and discover that their healing is not only personal. It is collective. It is ancestral. It is, in some way that we are only beginning to understand, cosmic.
And Homo Luminous, the horizon we are all walking toward balanced conscious creators that co-create together is the vision of what becomes possible when enough human beings have walked consciously through enough of these layers to generate something genuinely new in the collective field.
Not a utopia. A different quality of consciousness, lived in ordinary human life.

Where to Begin
If you have read this and recognized something in the patterns you cannot seem to change, in the weight that feels older than your own life, in the longing for something you cannot quite name then the beginning is always the same.
Come back to yourself.
The work starts not at Layer Five but at Layer One. With honesty. With the body. With the specific, real, sometimes uncomfortable truth of what you actually feel when you stop explaining it.
This is what we hold space for in The Inner Union our 8-session program moving through Eleusis and Hieros Gamos, for individuals and couples, online and in Crete.
And if you feel called to the land itself to the ancient landscape of Crete that has been holding this kind of remembering for thousands of years our experiences and sacred site routes are a doorway into exactly this work, walked through the body and the earth rather than through words.

The layers are real. The path through them is real. And you do not have to walk it alone.
