How It Still Becomes a Surprise – Rethinking a Marriage Proposal in Crete

A marriage proposal on a holiday in Crete — a classic.
And maybe… she’s already expecting it.
“Do you want me to pack your suitcase, or are you doing it yourself this time?” The question comes with a quiet, knowing smile. “And have you seen my favorite ring somewhere? I thought I left it… oh—there it is.”
She winks.
And you’re left thinking:
How am I supposed to make this a surprise now?
And whatever you do —
don’t look at her Pinterest board.
She’s probably already imagined the whole thing:
A picnic blanket on the beach.
Candles. Maybe champagne.
Sunset. Flowers. A musician? A photographer?
All beautiful.
But also… a bit predictable.
Keeping It a Surprise
So now you’re standing there wondering:
How do I even get her there without her already being overwhelmed with anticipation? And how could this still turn into a real surprise?
That’s exactly what we explored with two couples in Crete.
Not a tour.
But a treasure hunt — unfolding over several hours, or even multiple days
Something that draws you in naturally.
Keeps you moving, curious, engaged.
And at the same time, gently brings your attention back into the present moment.
No pressure.
No staged feeling.
Just a journey that unfolds on its own terms…
until, at the very end, something unexpected is waiting.
Following Curiosity Instead of a Plan
Laura immediately loved the idea of a treasure hunt in Crete when she told us she wanted to propose to her boyfriend.
(Yes — she to him.)
They were already planning a road trip across the island.
“We want to explore different corners and have some kind of adventure.”
Perfect.
To make sure nothing “got in the way” on the actual day, they agreed she would simply tell him about the booking.
“I found something online and it looked so cool, I just booked it — look!”
She waved the printed flyer in front of him.
He didn’t really have a chance to say "no".
And later…that didn’t change.
After following clues along the beach…through a gorge…finding their way step by step…
until they reached the final place.
And the “treasure”.
And that was enough.
A Journey They Thought They Chose
Another couple: Ashwini and her not-quite-yet fiancé, Ugur.
We met them in the old town of Chania. By then, they had already solved clues in Heraklion and Knossos.
They had “randomly” discovered the multi-day experience in Crete together — a mix of treasure hunt, local workshops, and time to explore the island.
Ashwini was convinced she had been the one to book it — and moved forward with that quiet certainty.
Ugur?
He spent most of the journey with a relaxed smile.
Cities.
Palaces.
Villages.
Nature.
And in between… small hints, decisions, moments.
A Minoan cooking workshop one evening.
Sitting together, preparing food, sharing dinner.
Another day, a small craft workshop — hands busy, attention slowing down.
Not separate “activities”.
Just part of how the days unfolded.
Only toward the very end did he get slightly nervous, as the setting for the big moment slowly revealed itself.
But the actual words?
She barely heard them.
The surprise had landed.
And for a moment, everything else was allowed too:
the overwhelm, the joy, that brief sense of “is this really happening?”
We create these treasure hunts in Crete individually —for proposals, engagements, or simply to experience the island in a different way.
Not as a fixed product.
But together with you.
So that it actually fits.
If you’re thinking about a treasure hunt or proposal in Crete — whether as a surprise engagement or just a meaningful experience during your trip — you’re welcome to reach out.
We’ll look at it together
and see what feels right. with much Love. Marieke Luminous School of Creation
